Girls who survive infancy are often subject to neglect, and many grow up to face extreme violence and even death at the hands of their own husbands or other family members. The war against girls is rooted in centuries-old tradition and sustained by deeply ingrained cultural dynamics which, in combination with government policies, accelerate the elimination of girls. Focusing on India and China, IT’S A GIRL tells the stories of abandoned and trafficked girls, of women who suffer extreme dowry-related violence, of brave mothers fighting to save their daughters’ lives, and of other mothers who would kill for a son. In 2003, on the eve of the Iraq war, director Iara Lee embarked on a journey to better understand a world increasingly embroiled in conflict and, as she saw it, heading for self-destruction. After several years, traveling over five continents, Iara encountered growing numbers of people who committed their lives to promoting change. This is their story; from Iran, where graffiti and rap became tools in fighting government repression, to Burma, where monks acting in the tradition of Gandhi take on a dictatorship, moving on to Brazil, where musicians reach out to slum kids and transform guns into guitars, and ending in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, where photography, music, and film have given a voice to those rarely heard. Featuring Medellín poets for peace, Capoeira masters from Brazil, Niger Delta militants, Iranian graffiti artists, women’s movement leaders in Rwanda, Lebanon’s refugee filmmakers, U.S. political pranksters, indigenous Kayapó activists from the Xingu River, Israeli dissidents, hip-hop artists from Palestine, and many more, CULTURES OF RESISTANCE explores how art and creativity can be ammunition in the battle for peace and justice.

Awards

ETHIOPIA / ADDIS ABABA, Audience Award, Addis International Film Festival

USA / CA, Best Documentary, Tiburon International Film Festival

INDIA / JAIPUR, Green Rose Award, Jaipur International Film Festival

BENIN / OUIDAH, Python Audience Prize, Jury Special Mentions, Ouidah International Film Festival

UKRAINE / KIEV, Best Documentary on Human Rights, Steps International Film Festival

USA / NY, Best Documentary, 2nd Place, Buffalo International Film Festival

USA / NV, Golden Reel Award Winner, Nevada Film Festival

USA / GA, Best Documentary Feature, Atlanta Underground Film Festival

USA / UT, Best Documentary Feature, Red Rock Film Festival

USA / CA, Love & Encouragement Award, SURGE Film Festival

Quotes

"In Palestine, we see so many films made about us—it get's exhausting.

Inspired by their 2007 memoir, THE POWER OF TWO offers an intimate portrayal of the bond between half-Japanese twin sisters Anabel Stenzel and Isabel Stenzel Byrnes, their battle with the fatal genetic disease cystic fibrosis (CF) and miraculous survival through double lung transplants. Defying all odds, Ana and Isa have emerged as authors, athletes and global advocates for organ donation, and their connection to the CF and transplant communities provides rare insight into the struggles — and overlooked joys — of chronic illness. Featuring archival footage and probing expert interviews, this poignant directorial debut of Academy Award nominated producer Marc Smolowitz presents a multi-faceted portrayal of a society at a tipping point around this triumph of modern medicine. Evocative without being sentimental, THE POWER OF TWO reveals the twins not as heroines but as authentic women who share our fears about mortality and inspire us to make a difference.

The Power Of Two (Trailer) from Collective Eye Films on Vimeo.

CLICK HERE to read Collective Eye's interview with the Stenzel twins

Awards:

Winner Slate Award Best Documentary Feature, California Independent Film Festival

World Premiere, DocuWeeks Theatrical Showcase

International Premiere, Tokyo International Film Festival

Winner Audience Choice Award, San Diego Asian Film Festival

30 FILM FESTIVALS SELECTION & 10 FILM FESTIVAL AWARDS!

Quotes:

"...COMPELLING...POETIC...

Coumba and her little sister Debo are the first to leave their family’s remote African village, where meals are prepared over open fires and water is drawn from wells, to attend school in the bustling city. Ndomo's life has been scarred by exploitation and mistreatment at the hands of those who would ride on the coattails of his talent. Trafficked to France as a teenager with promises to him and his family of riches beyond their imaginations, he was promptly abandoned in the streets of Paris. Despite this, Ndomo's story is one of inspiration as, fighting against all the odds, he manages to find a light at the end of a very long and dark tunnel. Kermit has risen from humble beginnings to a great height, signing a professional contract at 18 with Feyenoord in the Dutch league. His example is one of success brought about through the stable domestic system that exists in the World Cup host country. The prison population has exploded by 500% since the end of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. America locks up more of its racial and ethnic minorities than any other country (including South Africa at the height of apartheid). Mass incarceration has emerged as America's new caste system. Every year in this part of Ghana, hundreds of women endure communal and domestic violence as a result of traditional religious beliefs that demonize women. It’s also assumed that it is in women’s nature to harm others. These beliefs, combined with decades of poor health and educational standards, mean women inhabit a world where it is believed that nothing – not even illness or death – happens by chance. For over a century, women from all over the northern region have found refuge in a camp in the town of Gambaga, where they live under the protection of the chief, Gambarrana, the custodian of one of four places of sanctuary for women condemned of witchcraft. Made over the course of 5 years, this disturbing expose is the product of a collaboration between members of the 100-strong community of "witches" and women’s movement activists determined to end abusive practices and improve women’s lives in Africa. Painful experience and insight come together to create an intimate portrait of the lives of women ostracized by their communities. Told largely by the women themselves, their incredible stories and struggles are conveyed to a wide range of audiences by the director’s narration.

CLICK HERE to read Collective Eye's interview with Director & Producer Yara Badoe

Awards

Best Festival Documentary 2010 – Black International Film Festival UK

2nd Price – Documentaries, FESPACO 2011

Quotes

“An excellent exploration of how women are victimized… a valuable resource for understanding how to end this problem.”

– Cornelius Moore, California Newsreel

“A shocking, extraordinary film…”

– Michael Eaton, screenwriter

"A Brave and Brilliant Production"

– Hope for the African Village Child Trust

Stream

"}

The film also raises global awareness regarding the ongoing conflict in Democratic Republic of the Congo, and documents the use of local interactive street theater as a tool for resolving violent conflict, thus expanding the public's knowledge about the intersection of loosely-held weapons and landmine stockpiles in civilian environments, while demonstrating a positive peace-building model for communities for many parts of the world to emulate. The film profiles the work of SFCG and MAG, exploring the thesis that both the destruction of the physical tools of violence as well as a more subtle disarmament of the mind must take place in order for a lasting peace to emerge in a society fractured by decades of conflict. The film weaves these two narrative strands together amidst a broader societal context demonstrating the effects of armed conflict on civilians in a society governed by the rule of the gun rather than the rule of law.

See peacecommandos.org for more information.

Stream

["Kanopy
"option1":"University and College (with PPR*)","option2":null,"option3":null
["University and College (with PPR*)
"option1":"K-12, Public Libraries, Non-profits & Government (with PPR*)","option2":null,"option3":null
["K-12, Public Libraries, Non-profits & Government (with PPR*)
"option1":"Public Library (without PPR)","option2":null,"option3":null
["Public Library (without PPR)
["//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0133/2562/products/Peace_Commandos_388X657_1024x1024_a857509d-9f4d-4963-9c58-69edd110b364.png?v=1462561881
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0133/2562/products/Peace_Commandos_388X657_1024x1024_a857509d-9f4d-4963-9c58-69edd110b364.png?v=1462561881
Title

Directed by: Skye Fitzgerald

Produced by: Skye Fitzgerald

Released: 2010

Running Time: 27 min, with additional sequences: 54 min

PEACE COMMANDOS is a documentary film featuring the work of Search for Common Ground (SFCG), an innovative organization working to transform conflict in Congolese society through interactive street theater, and Mines Advisory Group (MAG), a humanitarian mine action organization working to collect and destroy weapons stores in the country. Trying to carve out a different type of life for himself, Peter often seems like a man out of step with this century—he can tame a wild horse, or field dress a deer, but he can't find a home for his family—but ultimately, this complete immersion in another way of life reveals that the price of freedom is something that is well worth paying.

Awards

Shortlist 2010 Academy Awards

Winner, Best Feature Film,Big Sky Documentary Film Festival

Winner Jury Prize Berlin International Film Festival

Winner Qantas Best Documentary, 2010

Winner Special Jury Award FIFO

Winner Youth Jury prize Ânûû-rû âboro

Winner Audience Award, Wairoa Maori Film Festival 2010

Quotes

“A collision of realities—earthly nature vs. human nature—lies at the very big heart of This Way of Life, catapulting this Kiwi-made story of a Maori family beyond mere portraiture and into a realm of metaphysics, melancholia and cosmic doubt: At the ends of the Earth, in a virtual Eden, is it possible for a family to live without petty grudges, anger, violence and authoritarian rule?”
— John Anderson, Variety Magazine

“Will stun you with its subtlety, honesty and heart”
— Darren Bevan, TVNZ

“Quietly profond, deeply poetic”
— Sunday Star Times

"Hotly tipped for an Oscar nomination”
— Raindance Film Festival

“Resonant and stunningly shot”
— John Hopewell, Variety Magazine

"}
