Please note:

We recommend organizing a screening and ordering a film 4 to 6 weeks out at minimum. A successful screening is planned with three months, giving a group time to find sponsors, a venue, and advertise. For more information about organizing a community screening, visit our Campus and Community Screenings page and download our Host a Screening Guide. If you have any questions, please contact Collective Eye Films screening team: screenings@collectiveeye.org

Accordingly, a variety of perspectives on this vital issue are included with the goal of fostering cooperation among stakeholders to achieve proper management and protection of these precious drugs.

Reviews / Quotes:

“Lucid, superbly filmed and galvanizing.” - The Washington Post

“The movie that will make you care about antibiotic misuse.” - WIRED

“Gripping and engaging.” - Slate

"}

In Haiti, Davis shadows the gregarious Madam Bwa—a traditional birth attendant—on her rounds through twisting, poverty-stricken streets. Despite the lack of formal medical training, Madam Bwa has helped to deliver 12,000 babies over the course of 32 years. In Cambodia, Pum Mach—a soft-spoken supervising midwife for 22 years—meets with several patients, including a 19-year-old with malaria who will need a cesarian section, but lacks the funds for surgery (Pum Mach comes up with a solution, but the delivery presents additional complications). Other medical dilemmas encountered involve an impacted placenta, a stillborn fetus, and a gangrenous uterus (doctors successfully remove the damaged portion of the organ). As Ethiopian OB/GYN resident Goitom Berhane laments, most of these problems are preventable, but a lack of education and reliable transportation transforms minor issues into major ones. Fortunately, Ehtiopia also has health extension workers, such as Hirity Belay—a tracksuit-sporting high school graduate with a year of training—who travels to remote villages on foot to assist pregnant women with nutrition, hygiene, and other concerns. Without the kind of dedicated professionals who appear in Davis's documentary, the situation would be worse, but she makes it clear that the women of developing nations need far more care than they've been receiving. Viewers should be forewarned that SISTER is fairly graphic, with frequent nudity and some squirm-inducing surgical procedures. Their stories reveal strategies in place to improve maternal health and the crisis of maternal and newborn mortality, shedding light on when the strategies work, when they don't work and how the lack of transport, communication and education create weak links along the way.

Sister is a film directed, produced, shot and edited by women.

Awards:

Montreal World Film Festival 2012

Take One Action Film Festival, Edinburgh 2012

Reykjavik Film Festival, 2012

African Diaspora Film Festival, 2013

Cambodia International Film Festival, 2012

One World Human Rights Film Festival, 2013

Doxa Film Festival, 2013

International Film Festival of Documentary Films on Human Rights : Bir Duino Kyrgyzstan, 2013

Quotes:

"Childbirth in Third World nations comes under scrutiny in this sovereign, intermittently harrowing documentary from director Brenda Davis that follows three healthcare working in Ethiopia, Haiti, and Cambodia, where the rates of childbirth-related deaths are alarmingly high. Since his death in 1925, Steiner's vision has grown in both relevance and urgency. THE CHALLENGE OF RUDOLF STEINER tells the story of his remarkable life, interwoven with examples of how his ideas and insights have influenced contemporary work in education, agriculture, medicine, finance, and the arts across the globe. To commemorate the 150th anniversary of Rudolf Steiner's birth, this two part documentary looks at his inspiring life, the impact and influence of his ideas and insights, and the activities, organizations, and establishments that embody his philosophies today. Interwoven with Steiner's biography, the film features teachers, doctors, biodynamic farmers, as well as social and business entrepreneurs, bankers, and economists drawing on the research and the indications given by Steiner to deepen our understanding of the human being and the world in which we live. THE CHALLENGE OF RUDOLF STEINER is comprised of sequences of the Austrian countryside where Steiner grew up, and Vienna where he studied science and mathematics, old photographs, archive film, paintings, and interviews with those who have studied his biography in great depth.

<iframe inspiration.

The Challenge of Rudolf Steiner (Trailer) from Collective Eye Films on Vimeo.

Quotes:

"Seeing so many people committed to bringing Steiner's ideas to life – and doing it so lovingly and gracefully – felt like a wonderful antidote to the crazy times we live in"

– A.P. Oregon, USA

"The worldwide spread of Rudolf Steiner's gifts to humanity were beautifully portrayed"

– J.C. Sussex, England

"I suspect the film will create innumerable ripples and waves for the people who see it – and may even change life directions for some"

– L.G. Bristol, England

"... the film makes you realize the importance and responsibility of being truly human"

– R.E. Bangor, Wales

"... a veritable triumph, and a rich feast of so much depth and inspiration"

– J.R. London

"The film conveys the breadth, scope, geographical reach, contemporary relevance and beauty of Steiner's legacy, and the challenge it offers us"

– Ralph White, New York Open Center, USA

"}

In North America, the way a Muslim woman dresses is her personal choice, but that choice, which includes whether or not to wear hijab to cover her hair, is often met with both approval and criticism. The film Between Allah & Me (and Everyone Else) explores the challenges of Farida, Shaila, Naima, and Sarah, four Torontonian Muslim women making decisions about their personal dress codes. When these women decide to start or stop wearing hijab, they cannot foresee the range of reactions other people will have to their choices. The film follows the women’s personal journeys and their interactions with different members of society, and in doing so reveals that the piece of fabric called hijab carries many diverse meanings and messages. As these women try to follow their faith and their hearts at the same time, the film unveils the intricate and complex effects of hijab on Muslim women, their families and communities, and the larger multicultural society in which they live.

Reviews / Quotes:

“[Kyoko] truly crafted a documentary… We saw fascinating character arcs and felt quite close to your characters… film that should travel to festivals and beyond.” – Marc Glassman, Film critic, publisher and professor, Ryerson University, MFA in Documentary Media program

“Between Allah and Me not only deals with a timely topic, but one that has great personal relevance to me. Farida, who is of Turkish decent, grew up in Russia at a time when the state discouraged religious expression, so she’s been trying to make up for lost time. She studies the Qur’an and prays five times a day, although her mother doesn’t see the point of the hijab. Farida also trades in her short-sleeved tops and above-the-knee skirts for more modest apparel. When she attended Islamic school as child, Shaila felt like a sinner until her mother bought her a hijab. After wearing it for 20 years, she has now entered politics, and decides that it doesn’t feel right anymore, so she only wears the hijab for special occasions. As she puts it, “I feel that Allah can read my heart, and that's what Islam is to me”. At the beginning of the film, Naima, a student, believes that wearing the Hijab is the right thing to do — although she isn’t sure the it’s mandatory, since religious scholars disagree on the point —but she comes to the same conclusion as Shaila, and stops wearing it. Since she wore the hijab for four years, those when know her express surprise, but she assures them that her beliefs haven’t changed. Her friend, Sarah, has her mother’s support for wearing the hijab, but her secular father criticizes the practice, calling it a relic from an earlier era.

Through highly personal interviews and 50 years of beautifully textured footage, filmmaker Taggart Siegel shares Farmer John’s haunting and humorous odyssey, capturing what it means to be wildly different in a rural community.

Awards

Slamdance Film Festival – Audience Award

Mendocino Film Festival – Special Jury Award

Mountainfilm in Telluride – Sustainable Planet Award

Mountainfilm in Telluride – Viewers’ Choice

San Francisco International Film Festival – Golden Gate Jury Award

Newport International Film Festival – Grand Jury Award

Chicago Int'l Documentary Festival – Audience Award

Nashville Film Festival – Grand Jury Award

Nashville Film Festival – Reel Current Award (selected by Al Gore)

Santa Cruz Film Festival – Festival Director’s Award

Wisconsin Film Festival – Grand Jury Award

Wisconsin Film Festival – Audience Award

Bend Film Festival – Grand Jury Award

Bend Film Festival – Audience Award (Best of Fest – all categories)

Milwaukee International Film Festival – Audience Award

Jackson Hole IDA DocuWeek – Audience Award

Beloit International Film Festival – Grand Jury Award

Beloit International Film Festival – Audience Award

Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival – Grand Jury Award

Pine Film Festival – Grand Jury Award, Best Storytelling

Inspiration Film Festival – Grand Jury Award

Inspiration Film Festival – Audience Award

Reno Tahoe Int’l Film Festival - Grand Jury Award

Wine Country Film Festival – Grand Jury Award

Quotes

" … one man's extraordinary life as a gateway to a larger history of tragedy and transition. Through highly personal interviews and 50 years of beautifully textured footage, filmmaker Taggart Siegel shares Farmer John’s haunting and humorous odyssey, capturing what it means to be wildly different in a rural community.

Awards

Slamdance Film Festival – Audience Award

Mendocino Film Festival – Special Jury Award

Mountainfilm in Telluride – Sustainable Planet Award

Mountainfilm in Telluride – Viewers’ Choice

San Francisco International Film Festival – Golden Gate Jury Award

Newport International Film Festival – Grand Jury Award

Chicago Int'l Documentary Festival – Audience Award

Nashville Film Festival – Grand Jury Award

Nashville Film Festival – Reel Current Award (selected by Al Gore)

Santa Cruz Film Festival – Festival Director’s Award

Wisconsin Film Festival – Grand Jury Award

Wisconsin Film Festival – Audience Award

Bend Film Festival – Grand Jury Award

Bend Film Festival – Audience Award (Best of Fest – all categories)

Milwaukee International Film Festival – Audience Award

Jackson Hole IDA DocuWeek – Audience Award

Beloit International Film Festival – Grand Jury Award

Beloit International Film Festival – Audience Award

Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival – Grand Jury Award

Pine Film Festival – Grand Jury Award, Best Storytelling

Inspiration Film Festival – Grand Jury Award

Inspiration Film Festival – Audience Award

Reno Tahoe Int’l Film Festival - Grand Jury Award

Wine Country Film Festival – Grand Jury Award

Quotes

" … one man's extraordinary life as a gateway to a larger history of tragedy and transition. These aren’t hysterics and finger pointing that can be alienating in their grandiosity, they are troubling reminders that it can happen to anyone. For so much of its runtime, Of Dogs and Men has made your stomach drop, your eyes water, your rage grow, but director Michael Ozias recognizes that that is just the beginning. Of Dogs and Men may make you cry and it will certainly make you mad, but more importantly than anything else, it shows you how to make a change." - Next Projection

"Domestic dogs who are judged “vicious”—including Jack Russell Terriers and Chihuahuas—are gunned down by officers in alarming numbers according to filmmaker Michael Ozias, despite the fact that not one recorded instance exists of a lawman being killed by any dog, anywhere. Of Dogs and Men interview the bereaved families of slain animals, people who are heartbroken and bewildered at the use of deadly force against their pets. Some officers also speak on camera; one police chief seems particularly clueless when trying to justify the shootings. Now there’s a generation of women leading the way. They’re strong, they’re inspiring, and they’re radically changing people’s lives. From the busy streets of Manhattan to the dusty slums of Kenya, YOGAWOMAN uncovers a global phenomenon that has changed the face of yoga forever. In record numbers women are discovering their own strength, vitality, peace and power through yoga. Claiming this ancient spiritual path from its traditionally male form, the result is a radical transformation of yoga into an international multi-billion dollar industry. Led by a new generation of dynamic female teachers, this “new” yoga replaces the male-centered, more rigid style with a distinctly feminine practice that honors intuition, family, strength, flow, connection, community, activism and the cyclical nature of women’s lives. The water, the banks, the bright lights of a port ahead, the lure of a coming paycheck and a home-cooked meal: This is the world of Barge. On board, dry land’s misfits find purpose and direction twenty-eight days at a time as the steady hands of an industrial ecosystem teeming with line boats, fleet boats, and a few million tons of cargo moved each year. A case for these 200-foot, flat-bottomed vessels playing an essential role in civilization is made by the captain of the Mary Parker, a towboat, which pushes along a dozen or so tightly-packed barges down the Mississippi River in filmmaker Ben Powell's low-key documentary. "When you get in your car, and you leave your driveway, guess what?" says the captain. "Concrete was probably in a barge. The tires you're rolling on, the petroleum to make them was in a barge. Asphalt... that stuff was in a barge." He goes on to suggest that just about anything we can buy or use was once, in its original materials form, delivered somewhere by barge, and without these sometimes ugly carriers society would grind to a halt. Life as a captain or crew member has its insular pleasures: the men (and they are all men) aboard the Mary Parker submit to a rhythmic life of shift work with the hum of a powerful boat engine beneath their feet. Powell quickly recognizes that not a lot happens aboard a barge, aside from tasks designed to keep a lot of barges from drifting apart or crashing together. The workers live simply and leave behind domestic problems at home while on month-long trips. And the possibility for advancement is real: a six-figure income is not out of line for a veteran worker with a high school diploma. Powell doesn't make any statement here, but he is a good cultural anthropologist telling the story of a little noticed cog in the global wheel of commerce. Recommended. - C, P. (T.
