Featuring a dynamic reggae soundtrack and a searing voice over based on text by Jamaica Kincaid, as well as interviews with former Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley, former Deputy Director of the IMF Stanley Fisher, and former President of Haiti Jean-Bertrand Aristide, LIFE AND DEBT portrays the relationship between Jamaican poverty and the practices of international lending agencies while driving home the devastating consequences of globalization.

Quotes

"**** Powerful!...Offers the clearest analysis of globalization and its negative effects that I've ever seen."
—Stephen Holden, The New York Times

"A must-see film."
—Michael M. We meet Mai and her cosmopolitan family in communist Hanoi . Mai is proud that her father fought in the American War, defeating both the U.S. and “their pawns,” the South Vietnamese. More than anything, she wants to make her family proud of her. So, fueled by the opportunity for a better education and enticed by MTV-inspired visions of America, Mai travels to the United States for her senior year of high school. Nothing in her wildest imagination prepares Mai for her crash landing in rural Mississippi, where her relationships with white Pentecostal and black Baptist host-families, self-proclaimed red-necks, transvestites, and South Vietnamese immigrants challenge her long-held ideas about America, herself, freedom, and even about Vietnam.

Mai's America (Trailer) from Collective Eye Films on Vimeo.

Awards

Distinguished Documentary Achievement Feature Documentary, IDA

Audience Award for Feature Documentary, SXSW

Golden Gate Certificate of Merit, San Francisco International Film Festival

Best Documentary, Northampton Film Festival

Best Documentary, Magnolia Independent Film Festival

Best Documentary, Indie Memphis

Best of Festival, Wine Country Film Festival

Quotes

"Insightful and bittersweet, the film provides an unexpected picture of America through the eyes of a charming candid heroine.”
— Tini Tran, Associated Press

"Astonishing. They came to São Paulo, in the south of the country, to escape drought in the North or to make their fortune. In 2003, on the eve of the Iraq war, director Iara Lee embarked on a journey to better understand a world increasingly embroiled in conflict and, as she saw it, heading for self-destruction. After several years, traveling over five continents, Iara encountered growing numbers of people who committed their lives to promoting change. This is their story; from Iran, where graffiti and rap became tools in fighting government repression, to Burma, where monks acting in the tradition of Gandhi take on a dictatorship, moving on to Brazil, where musicians reach out to slum kids and transform guns into guitars, and ending in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, where photography, music, and film have given a voice to those rarely heard. Featuring Medellín poets for peace, Capoeira masters from Brazil, Niger Delta militants, Iranian graffiti artists, women’s movement leaders in Rwanda, Lebanon’s refugee filmmakers, U.S. political pranksters, indigenous Kayapó activists from the Xingu River, Israeli dissidents, hip-hop artists from Palestine, and many more, CULTURES OF RESISTANCE explores how art and creativity can be ammunition in the battle for peace and justice.

Awards

ETHIOPIA / ADDIS ABABA, Audience Award, Addis International Film Festival

USA / CA, Best Documentary, Tiburon International Film Festival

INDIA / JAIPUR, Green Rose Award, Jaipur International Film Festival

BENIN / OUIDAH, Python Audience Prize, Jury Special Mentions, Ouidah International Film Festival

UKRAINE / KIEV, Best Documentary on Human Rights, Steps International Film Festival

USA / NY, Best Documentary, 2nd Place, Buffalo International Film Festival

USA / NV, Golden Reel Award Winner, Nevada Film Festival

USA / GA, Best Documentary Feature, Atlanta Underground Film Festival

USA / UT, Best Documentary Feature, Red Rock Film Festival

USA / CA, Love & Encouragement Award, SURGE Film Festival

Quotes

"In Palestine, we see so many films made about us—it get's exhausting.

At the heart of the film is the story of blacklisted playwright Václav Havel and his fellow dissidents who, for two decades, spoke out against totalitarianism. THE POWER OF THE POWERLESS features rare and never-before-seen interviews with key figures of the Velvet Revolution, including Václav Havel. The participation of young Czechs in the film, who reveal that much of their country's recent history has already been forgotten, makes the film all the more pertinent for young viewers. Directed by Primetime Emmy Award winner Cory Taylor. THE POWER OF THE POWERLESS has already been broadcast in 30 countries on 10 television networks, featured in 21 international film festivals, won multiple awards, and is currently being used by human rights organizations to encourage dissidents struggling in non-democratic countries including Burma, the Middle East and Cuba.

The Director's Statement

Czechoslovakia's "Velvet Revolution" is one of the most stirring episodes of people-power in recent history. Inspired by the courageous struggle of a handful of dissidents, and sparked by idealistic students demonstrating in the streets of Prague, Czechs and Slovaks brought an end to forty years of communist tyranny through bloodless revolution in 1989. Today, Vaclav Havel, the former outlaw playwright who led the opposition, is respected as one of the most important human rights figures of the 20th Century. Though many informed people see the relevance of the Velvet Revolution to current events, great majorities of people around the world are still unaware of this inspiring story.

Inspired by their 2007 memoir, THE POWER OF TWO offers an intimate portrayal of the bond between half-Japanese twin sisters Anabel Stenzel and Isabel Stenzel Byrnes, their battle with the fatal genetic disease cystic fibrosis (CF) and miraculous survival through double lung transplants. Defying all odds, Ana and Isa have emerged as authors, athletes and global advocates for organ donation, and their connection to the CF and transplant communities provides rare insight into the struggles — and overlooked joys — of chronic illness. Featuring archival footage and probing expert interviews, this poignant directorial debut of Academy Award nominated producer Marc Smolowitz presents a multi-faceted portrayal of a society at a tipping point around this triumph of modern medicine.
