The unusual documentary Kedi - an art house hit - captures the unique relationship that the city's dwellers and small businesses have with stray felines... Kedi introduces a lot of folks who sell fish or run delis or wait on cafe tables, and captures how they relate with genuine affection to the cats who wander in and out, feeding them, rubbing their tummies, or brushing their fur. But the film isn't just about semi-pet-worship: there is plenty of philosophical musing here about cats being a bridge to God and serving to remind us of our best selves. Filmmakers Alexandria Bombach and Mo Scarpelli’s documentary details how the concept of a free Afghani press is struggling to take root here, profiling four local photojournalists—including Farzana Wahidy and her Pulitzer Prize-winning husband Massoud Hossaini—as they face skepticism, hostility, and threatened violence while trying to document events in a country that is caught in an endless struggle between forces that want to maintain a rigid Islamic theocracy and those trying to inch Afghanistan towards becoming a progressive state where a spirited independent press can operate without fear of reprisal. Considering that very little current news from Afghanistan is relayed via the U.S. media, Frame by Frame offers an invaluable, albeit also harrowing, glimpse into a nation that doesn’t seem to have benefited much from the occupation by U.S. and European forces. Indeed, the Afghanistan captured here by the photojournalists appears to be very much locked in a Taliban mind-frame. Highly recommended. Aud: C, P. (P. After the regime fell from power in 2001, a fledgling free press emerged and a photography revolution was born. Set in a modern Afghanistan bursting with color and character, FRAME BY FRAME follows four Afghan photojournalists as they navigate an emerging and dangerous media landscape – reframing Afghanistan for the world, and for themselves. Aud: C, P. (P. Jason DeCaires Taylor is an eco-sculptor who casts cement statues from live human models and installs them on the ocean floor to create an artificial coral reef. The story follows the making of an angel, a symbol of hope, with wings made from live fan coral. She will reside in an underwater museum alongside 400 of Jason’s statues located off the coast of Cancún in the National Marine Park, El Museo Subacuatico De Arte (MUSA). Over time the statues grow coral, provide habitat for marine life and a diversion for tourists, offering the natural reefs a reprieve from heavy usage. But when the coral that has been growing on the statues starts to die, issues related to waste water pollution and rising sea temperatures become evident. Through local experts and scientists in the field, the full scope of the problem is revealed. Jason faces his own problems in keeping his workshop afloat, but never tires from his efforts to spread the message about this valuable ecosystem that is in grave danger of disappearing completely if steps are not taken to prevent its demise. Through the hauntingly beautiful underwater world created by this incredible eco-sculptor, we are reminded that everything connects.

<span shot documentary on art in the service of science. English-born sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor lives in West Indies with his wife and child. After Hurricane Ivan devastates Grenada, Taylor decides to build a series of underwater sculptures to double as an artificial reef. Over time, coral, algae, and other biological entities begin to cover the cement figures, transforming them into creatures that simultaneously appear both elegant and eerie. Eventually, they will no longer be recognizable as human. Taylor's pieces also carry messages about global warming and water pollution, such as the heads-in-the-ground-figures of "The Politicians," and "The Last Supper", which depicts a repast of fish and hand grenades. "The Listener," a body covered in ears, actually records the sounds of the reef. As word of his work spreads, Taylor receives invitations from other territories concerned with reef protection (grants and sponsorships pay for his work). In Mexico, the artist creates "The Silent Evolution," a congregation of 400 figures that look quite realistic because Taylor used people in Cancun as models. In Angel Azul, Taylor and his team cover a woman from head to toe (only her nostrils remain visible) in goopy white silicone, a scene sure to incite claustrophobia in many viewers. Cravat follows the making of this piece, called "The Angel", from start to finish. After installation, Taylor leaves Mexico with his family for the Canary Islands, where he plans to create more underwater communities. An interesting portrait of a nontraditional artist, this is recommended." - Video Librarian

“It’s about people and their relationship with nature.

Geoffrey Madeja's documentary offers a positive view of Soleri's work and vision, which was striking for its audacious plan of hyper-dense human habitation but was perhaps a bit too utopian for practical purposes. Born in Turin, Italy, Soleri grew up influenced by and drawn to urban settings, He was briefly a student of Frank Lloyd Wright in the late 1940s, but the film claims that Wright became upset when Soleri outshone him in a bridge design competition. Soleri returned to Italy in 1950 to oversee the construction of a ceramics factory, but came back to the U.s. in 1956 to pursue the concept of "arcology"--a melding of architecture and ecology--through the construction of an experimental community dubbed Arcosanti. But this project, worked on by students and volunteers over several decades, never achieved completion, and it is primarily used today as an educational forum to highlight Soleri's theories and celebrate his design skills. Explore the artist, the dreamer, the philosopher, the architect Paolo Soleri as he tries to build his new world filled with futuristic ideas and controversy.

Reviews / Quotes:

One of the more colorfully eccentric figures of the 20th century was Paolo Soleri (1919-2013), whose theories on urban redesign earned him a devoted cult-like following during his lifetime. The documentary combines archival footage with interviews of admirers to serve up an entertaining portrait of a charismatic architectural outsider. Recommended. Aud: C, P. (P. With dignity and candor, Saoud, Haneen, and Rahman reveal the lives they lost in Baghdad, the lives they are now forced to live in their host countries, and the new life of beauty and freedom they long for every day. Rahman works as a clown in Syria, bringing love and laughter to young Iraqi refugee children. Haneen paints her memories, recalling the beauty of Iraqi women. Saoud straddles the border between childhood and adolescence as he ponders his identity amidst the changes that force him to grow up.
