When having a relationship with a real human being is too hard, where do you turn?
Silicone Soul explores the emotional connection some people have to their synthetic companions and what that means for the future of human relationships. Ultimately, this is a film about love, loneliness, secrets and, perhaps, acceptance. Who are we to judge who…or what…people choose to love?
The bonds shown are diverse and layered: from romantic relationships, to friendships, to a recreation of the love between mother and child. Silicone Soul does not allow for its subjects to be easily labeled or judged. Instead, the film is a collection of resoundingly human stories that reflect universal themes—the desire for love, compassion, and communication.
Official Selection for DOC NYC 2018, SF DOC FEST 2018, & Thessaloniki International Documentary Fest 2018

“Gilbert raises the right questions about sexism, modern loneliness, and the slow erosion of the uncanny valley, but without demonizing or even judging her subjects. Instead, she shows how sweet and surprising it can be when humans, faced with a difference, choose to be kind.” -Leah Pickett, Chicago Reader

“To make a film that examines people who have turned silicone companionship into an actual loving relationship seems almost too easy as a way to mock and belittle those who have chosen such a lifestyle. But director Melody Gilbert has plenty of compassion for her subjects.” -Steve Prokoby, Third Coast Review

"Mesmerizing" & "Fascinating" -Christopher Llewellyn Reed, Hammer to Nail

"This film shows us where advanced technology is taking us and how it is changing our most intimate relationships." - Professor Danielle Knafo, Psychology Professor, Long Island University

"A lesson in human empathy." -Modern Times Review

"Like a true-to-life version of the acclaimed indie hit Lars and the Real Girl" - Screen Anarchy Review
